Join the Friends of Louisiana Wildlife Refuges, Inc., and Southeast Louisiana National Wildlife Refuges as we Walk for the Wild! Walk 5K on one of the Southeast Louisiana National Wildlife Refuges (NWR) to raise awareness and funds for our wildlife refuges. Win a Prize!

About the event
Join our Event - Register for free to join the 5K Challenge to raise awareness of the National Wildlife Refuge System. Choose Team Friends of Louisiana Wildlife Refuges to support your local Southeast Louisiana Refuges. Walk or move 5K (3.1 miles) on one of the refuges listed above anytime during National Wildlife Refuge Week, October 8 - 14th, 2023. Designated trail mile markers will be set up at Big Branch Marsh, Bayou Sauvage Urban and Bayou Teche National Wildlife Refuges, but you are welcome to walk 5K on any trail, just get outside!
Win a prize: Send us a selfie photo of your walk and pick up your Walk for the Wild prize in person during the annual Wild Things event on Saturday, October 14, 2023, from 10 AM - 4 PM in Lacombe, LA. Have other plans? Can't make it to Wild Things - email us at: lwrfriends@gmail.com and we will get the prize to you in the mail.

Event Details
Who: anyone and everyone
What: The Walk for the Wild is a 5K walk challenge on our local refuges. Participate in one of our 5K Challenge walks at Bayou Sauvage Urban, Big Branch Marsh, or Bayou Teche Refuges. We will have signs along three different refuge trails. Follow the signs from the start to the finish. Finish the challenge and receive a small prize. To receive your prize, you must register and show proof of completion. See How to Participate below.
When: Wildlife Refuge Week October 8-14, 2023.
Where: Any Refuge trail, state park trail, trail around your home – just get outside!
How to participate: Choose your trail – be it on a refuge, state park or other outdoor trail system and Walk for the Wild! Trail markers will be set-up at Bayou Sauvage Urban, Big Branch Marsh and Bayou Teche National Wildlife Refuges, so take a walk on the wild side with us! Please register with the link below.
Other optional activities while you walk:
You can participate in an iNaturalist Bio Blitz or take the Animal Olympic challenge along the way.
BioBlitz:Â Visit one of our 9 Southeast Louisiana Refuges during October 8-14, and record any animals or plants you observe as you walk using the iNaturalist app or take a photo and upload to the iNaturalist website www.iNaturalist.org.
Redeem your prize. To redeem your prize, you can stop by the Walk for the Wild Booth at our Wild Things Celebration on October 14th (Southeast Louisiana headquarters - 61389 Hwy 434, Lacombe LA 10 AM – 4 PM) or email your photo to: lwrfriends@gmail.com. Be sure to Register.
